Amongst
the Cork Trees in the Alentejo Soraya's first trip. She is two weeks old. We arrive from the coast where the wind usually provides some welcome cooling. Here inland the heat is relentless. We open a gate and drive onto a piece of land with a ruin. Nobody anywhere. Crickets chirping, insects buzzing, every now and then there is a rustling in the grass. Nervously, because we haven't asked permission, we put the piece of living furniture down here on someone's private land. A tractor comes closer, it is the farmer from next door, a friendly person. Later he returns with his wife. They bring oranges from their garden. We talk about the heat, the work and the Alentejo. They say they never had holidays because of the animals, only day trips to the sea... Villanova de Milfontes, Zambujeira do Mar, Odeceixe. Full of pride they tell us about the beautiful beaches of the region and advise us, in a caring Portuguese manner, to best go to the sea with the children to cool down from the intense heat.
